AGRICULTURA

Ottawa’s agriculture industry is limited to a 150 day growing season. Outside this small window the climate does not provide adequate temperatures for plant growth. Food supply is maintained through continuous imports from the United States and Mexico with high embodied energy. To grow food in Ottawa during the winter a green energy source is needed. The Ottawa River represents one such source as its proven potential for hydro-eletrcic power rests in its vast tributary area.

This project proposes an indoor produce market that uses the energy of the Ottawa River to grow local produce during the winter. Further, the work aims to embrace the mechanical systems required to maintain stable growing temperatures and integrate a market hall with energy storage devices and the greenhouses.
